Ritual Rock-a-billies

O programa de rádio El Ritual Nocturno completou 20 anos divulgando o rockabilliy para a cidade de Barcelona. E o melhor, predominantemente com bandas locais de grande qualidade, como se ouve nesta seleção.

O álbum Ritual Rock-a-billies, de 1998, é um retrato da cena espanhola da época, e uma amostra do cast da gravadora El Toro Records, de Leo Castro, também diretor do programa.

Pelo que pude apurar, o volume 2 da série chegou a ser anunciado em 2003 mas não foi lançado.

O disco é uma prova do vigor do estilo, que continua sendo tocando com paixão por todo o planeta.

The radio program El Ritual Nocturno has turned 20 years promoting the rockabilly at the Barcelona City. And better, playing many great local bands, as we can listen here.

The Ritual Rock-a-billies album was released en 1998 and became a portrait of then spanish scene. And a sample of the cast of El Toro Records by Leo Castro, also de radio program director.

As I found here, the second volume was annunciated in 2003, but not released.

The album proves the style strength, that stills being played with passion all over the world. (Sorry for the english, corrections will be welcome)

Los Bravos

Los Bravos foi uma banda espanhola que estorou nas paradas de 1966 com o hit black is black. A música alcançou o segundo lugar na inglaterra e o quarto nos EUA, vendendo mais de um milhão de cópias por todo o mundo. Los Bravos, na verdade, soava muito mais como uma banda do mainstream americano que como um conjunto europeu.

Os arranjos musicais e o timbre do vocalista alemão Mike Hogel eram muito semelhantes ao de Gene Pitney e essa confusão permaneceu por toda a carreira da banda. Depois do LP Black is black de 1966, Los Bravos lançaram apenas Bring a Little Lovin' em 1968.

Los Bravos were a Spanish band who hit the 1966 charts with the single Black is black. This song reached the second place in England and the fourth in USA, selling more then one million copies around the world. Los Bravos, in truth, sounded much more like an American mainstream rock and roll band then a European one.
The instrumental arrangements and the voice of Germany-born singer Mike Hogel were too similar to Gene Pitney, arousing confusion all through Los Bravos' career. After the Black is Black album, they released only one other, Bring a Little Lovin', in 68.

Hipbone Slim & Knee Tremblers

The Sheik Said Shake é o mais recente álbum da banda inglesa Hipbone Slim & The Knee Shakers. Hipbone Slim, o homem das guitarras, é Sir Bald Didley, que tocou nos Waistcoats e pilota um selo de surf music o Alopecia Records. Bruce Brand que já segurou as baquetas na banda de Link Wray, é uma lenda do garage inglês e participou de várias bandas de Billy Childish, entre as quais The Milkshakes, The Mighty Cesars e The Headcoats. John Gibbs responde pelo contrabaixo acústico.

O disco, lançado em meados deste ano, mistura rockabilly e blues pantanosos com uma pitada curry, que confere um certo exotismo oriental. Feito para sacudir seu quadril e fazer suas pernas tremerem!

The Sheik Said Shake is the last album of the english band Hipbone Slim & The Knee Shakers. Hipbone Slim, the man behind the guitars, is Sir Bald Didley, who played in Waistcoats and drives a surf music label, the Alopecia Records. Bruce Brand, who hold the drumsticks for Link Wray's band, is a garage legend and toke place in some of Billy Childish's bands like The Milkshakes, The Mighty Cesars and The Headcoats. John Gibbs answers for the acoustic contrabass.

The album, released this year, mix rockabilly and swamp blues with a pinch of curry, what brings some exotic zest. Made to shake your hips and tremble your legs!

Os Baratas Tontas

A gente costuma dizer que santo de casa não faz milagre... pois faz sim! Uma das bandas pioneiras do psychobilly nacional -- e das melhores também -- é de Belo Horizonte, minha terra natal. Entre 92 e 97 os Baratas Tontas animaram a noite da cidade com seu rock rápido e escrachado. Gravaram um único disco, disponível para download gratuito. Este vídeo também merece uma visita. Sua carreira está devidamente documentada no site oficial da banda. Vale uma passada no link de Reportagens para ver alguns fanzines, os avôs dos blogs. Pois era assim que se fazia a "cena" antes da internet! 

A pionner of brazilian psychobilly --and one of the best, Os Baratas Tontas (something like "Dizzy Cockroaches") cheered the Belo Horizonte's night between 92 and 97 with their fast and wicked rock'n'roll.  They recorded only one album, available for free download. This clip also deserves a visit. Their career has been properly documented in their official site. It pays to see the Reportagens link, with some fanzine, the grandpas of the today's blogs. It's like things worked before internet! (Sorry for the english, corrections will be welcome.)

The Phantom Surfers - XXX Party

"Um dos grupos mais expressivos da cena geek garage/surf music de São Francisco, os Phantom Surfers geralmente são muito divertidos ao vivo e, no mínimo, engraçados. Além de tocar bem surf music instrumental, a banda se fantasia, atira objetos na platéia e conta piadas bestas. Mas nesse estranho álbum conceitual, eles fazem surf music pornô com a ajuda dos parceiros Dolomite e Rudy Ray Moore (comediantes negros das antigas, piadas pesadas) e o que parece uma idéia legal se transforma numa tortura excruciante. Entupido de piadas de péssimo gosto, XXX Party é um disco que, sem dúvida, não deseja ser divertido de uma forma irônica, mas que acaba ultrapassando essa expectativa. É uma idéia original a de combinar surf music, um gênero tão singelo, com piadas extremamente obcenas. Mas Os Phantom Surfer falham irremediavelmente ao fazer um disco que não é divertido ou sequer audível."

Bem, como uma crítica dessas, só nos resta conferir, não é?

"One of the foremost groups in San Francisco's ultra-geeky surf-garage scene, the Phantom Surfers generally are a lot of fun live and are at least mildly humorous. Along with playing some better-than-average surf instrumentals, the band dresses up in silly costumes, chucks various items at the audience, and tells bad jokes. But on this strange concept album, they do X-rated surf music with help from pals Dolomite and Rudy Ray Moore (old-school, black, X-rated comedians), which sounds like an okay idea but turns out to be excruciating torture. Rife with some of the worst office jokes ever uttered, XXX Party is an album that undoubtedly wishes to be not funny in an ironic way, but then succeeds beyond its wildest expectations. It is a far-out idea -- that surf music, as benign a musical genre as there is, could be combined with jokes that are extremely nasty -- but the Phantom Surfers fail utterly in making this record even mildly entertaining or listenable."

The Montesas

The Montesas é uma banda alemã que toca r'n'b/rockabilly clássicos, mas que consegue ainda imprimir uma marca própria ao estilo. Conforme seu site oficial, em sua terra natal, a batida nua e crua dos Montesas é chamada "Star-Club-style" pela semelhança com as bandas de rock que tocavam no circuito St Pauli, na noite de Hamburgo, no começo dos 60. Uma de suas marcas registradas é a presença de um ógão weltmeister ainda dos tempos da Alemanha Oriental. The Montesas is a germany band that plays a classic r'n'b/rockabilly, but with their own character. As said in their site, in their homeland, the raw and puristic beat of The Montesas is called "Star-Club-Style" beat, comparing them with the wild rock'n'roll bands who performed the St. Pauli circuit in Hamburg's nightlife during the early 60's. One of their registred marks is the creative use of a east german weltmeister organ. You can see here their version of a Kraftwerk's classic, and here another cover, in a past post of the Chicletes.
