Os Baratas Tontas

A gente costuma dizer que santo de casa não faz milagre... pois faz sim! Uma das bandas pioneiras do psychobilly nacional -- e das melhores também -- é de Belo Horizonte, minha terra natal. Entre 92 e 97 os Baratas Tontas animaram a noite da cidade com seu rock rápido e escrachado. Gravaram um único disco, disponível para download gratuito. Este vídeo também merece uma visita. Sua carreira está devidamente documentada no site oficial da banda. Vale uma passada no link de Reportagens para ver alguns fanzines, os avôs dos blogs. Pois era assim que se fazia a "cena" antes da internet! 

A pionner of brazilian psychobilly --and one of the best, Os Baratas Tontas (something like "Dizzy Cockroaches") cheered the Belo Horizonte's night between 92 and 97 with their fast and wicked rock'n'roll.  They recorded only one album, available for free download. This clip also deserves a visit. Their career has been properly documented in their official site. It pays to see the Reportagens link, with some fanzine, the grandpas of the today's blogs. The Phantom Surfers - XXX Party

"Um dos grupos mais expressivos da cena geek garage/surf music de São Francisco, os Phantom Surfers geralmente são muito divertidos ao vivo e, no mínimo, engraçados. Além de tocar bem surf music instrumental, a banda se fantasia, atira objetos na platéia e conta piadas bestas. Mas nesse estranho álbum conceitual, eles fazem surf music pornô com a ajuda dos parceiros Dolomite e Rudy Ray Moore (comediantes negros das antigas, piadas pesadas) e o que parece uma idéia legal se transforma numa tortura excruciante. Entupido de piadas de péssimo gosto, XXX Party é um disco que, sem dúvida, não deseja ser divertido de uma forma irônica, mas que acaba ultrapassando essa expectativa. É uma idéia original a de combinar surf music, um gênero tão singelo, com piadas extremamente obcenas. Mas Os Phantom Surfer falham irremediavelmente ao fazer um disco que não é divertido ou sequer audível."

Bem, como uma crítica dessas, só nos resta conferir, não é?

"One of the foremost groups in San Francisco's ultra-geeky surf-garage scene, the Phantom Surfers generally are a lot of fun live and are at least mildly humorous. Along with playing some better-than-average surf instrumentals, the band dresses up in silly costumes, chucks various items at the audience, and tells bad jokes. But on this strange concept album, they do X-rated surf music with help from pals Dolomite and Rudy Ray Moore (old-school, black, X-rated comedians), which sounds like an okay idea but turns out to be excruciating torture. Rife with some of the worst office jokes ever uttered, XXX Party is an album that undoubtedly wishes to be not funny in an ironic way, but then succeeds beyond its wildest expectations. It is a far-out idea -- that surf music, as benign a musical genre as there is, could be combined with jokes that are extremely nasty -- but the Phantom Surfers fail utterly in making this record even mildly entertaining or listenable."

The Montesas

The Montesas é uma banda alemã que toca r'n'b/rockabilly clássicos, mas que consegue ainda imprimir uma marca própria ao estilo. Conforme seu site oficial, em sua terra natal, a batida nua e crua dos Montesas é chamada "Star-Club-style" pela semelhança com as bandas de rock que tocavam no circuito St Pauli, na noite de Hamburgo, no começo dos 60. Uma de suas marcas registradas é a presença de um ógão weltmeister ainda dos tempos da Alemanha Oriental. The Montesas is a germany band that plays a classic r'n'b/rockabilly, but with their own character. As said in their site, in their homeland, the raw and puristic beat of The Montesas is called "Star-Club-Style" beat, comparing them with the wild rock'n'roll bands who performed the St. Pauli circuit in Hamburg's nightlife during the early 60's. One of their registred marks is the creative use of a east german weltmeister organ. You can see here their version of a Kraftwerk's classic, and here another cover, in a past post of the Chicletes. Ressaca do Moog

Outro dia, um amigo muito perspicaz apontou para o papel de destaque que os teclados tinham na música jovem dos anos 60. Por que seria? Meu palpite é que os sintetizadores Moog estavam na moda, como aliás, cantou o grande Simonal em Samba do mug: "corta essa, você tem de andar pra frente, vou dar-lhe um mug de presente".

Ok, os tecladinhos estavam em todas, mas houve quem quisesse mais. Nessa seqüência, a banda Avanço 5 revisitou, a seu modo, três sucessos de 1968: F... comme femme, de Salvatore Adamo, First of may dos Bee Gees e Stormy, de Dennis Yost. O resultado? Bem, confira por si... Quanto a mim, confesso que fiquei com ressaca.

Some days ago, a keen  friend of mine show me how important was the keyboard to the 60's young music. Why so? I guess the Moog synths was a "must" then, as sung by Wilson Simonal in Samba do mug: Go on, you ought to go straightforward, i"ll offer you a moog as a gift.

Ok, the keyboards ruled, but not everyone was satisfied. In this sequence, the Avanço 5 covered three 68's hits: F... comme femme (Salvatore Adamo), First of may (Bee Gees) and Stormy (Dennis Yost). And what? Well, listen by yourself... I confess: it gave me a kind of hangover...

Lindo sonho delirante

Nos anos de chumbo da ditadura no Brasil, a censura deu um cochilo e fomos brindados com um compacto sensacional, uma pérola da psicodelia brasileira: LSD - Lindo Sonho Delirante, de Fábio. O artista, que depois enveredou por outros estilos como a soul music e a música romântica, ainda protagonizou um dos momentos polêmicos do Festival Internacional da Canção de 70, quando defendeu a música Encouraçado, que ficou em terceiro lugar. In the dark years of the brazilian dictatorship, the censors napped and we were gifted with a brilliant single, a gem of the brazilian psychedelia: LSD - Lindo Sonho Delirante, by Fabio. The artist, who after tried another styles like soul and romantic, also toke place at the polemic Festival Internacional da Canção de 70, singin the 3rd place Encouraçado. The Fireballs

A carreira de gravações da banda The Fireballs durou uma década inteira, de 1958 a 1968. O grupo foi batizado quando se preparava para um concurso de talentos no natal de 57, quando tocou sem parar o hit Great balls of fire de Jerry Lee Lewis. Eles inauguraram um som instrumental econômico e personalíssimo, mistura de batidas texanas e mexicanas. The Fireballs foi um dos poucos grupos instrumentais que se adaptou com sucesso à presença de um vocalista, quando o cantor Jinny Gilmer se juntou a eles em 1961. Em 63, tiveram o hit Sugar Shack figurando por 5 semanas na Billboard americana.

The Fireball's recording carrer lasted a whole decade (1958-1968). The group were christened during preparation for a talent contest at Christmas 1957 when they performed Jerry Lee Lewis' "Great Balls of Fire" endlessly during their set. They pioneered an economic and highly distinctive Tex-Mex instrumental sound. They were one of the few instrumental groups to adapt succesfully to become a vocal band when singer Jimmy Gilmer joined them in 1961 and their only no.1 US hit Sugar Shack was sung for him.
